HAWKSNEST BAY

0930 February 6, 2015, Hawksnest Bay, St. John Island, USVI: We picked up the one mooring in Hawksnest Bay for boats over 60 ft. Hawksnest Bay is the next cove to the east on the north side of St. John Island from Caneel Bay.  The west side of the Cove has one of the seven beaches that are part of the Caneel Bay Plantation. The remainder of the bay has a combination of private and public beaches.

Our first excursion for the day was to climb to the top of Peace Hill to see the stone ruins of an old sugar plantation windmill. The trail started at west end of Denis Bay,  just behind Perkins Cay. We brought the small dingy around Perkins Cay which is to the east of Hawksnest bay.
The trail to Peace Hill took about a half hour. We arrived at a large flat area to the east of the windmill. The views were spectacular. To the east we could see over the Caneel Bay Plantation to the west end of St. Thomas. To the north we had a clear view of all of the south side of Jost Van Dyke. To the north east we could see the west end of Tortola and to the immediate east we could see Trunk Bay the next large cove to the east. To the south we had a great areal view of Hawksnest Bay. As described this hill is out on a peninsula with wind exposure from at least 270 degrees, a great location for the windmill.

After changing dinges Jim, Kim and I took off to snorkel in Trunk Bay. Beth and I had snorkeled here on our honeymoon 43 years ago. As this very popular beach has a underwater snorkel trail they have a buoy supported line near shore to tie off dinges close to the beach, which we used. This was my second opportunity to use my underwater Go Pro camera and it worked great. We saw a lot of colorful fish and coral. Unfortunately the water was a bit murky.

After a late lunch on the boat we all spent the rest of afternoon on the beautiful beach at the south side of Hawksnest Bay.  With aqua colored water, white power sand beach and thick overhanging palms the beach was near perfect. On the way to the beach we saw two large sea turtles, bot both disappeared before we could get our camera out. Jackie had joined us on our hike in the morning and swam with us in the afternoon. It's not hard to understand why she is always happy, and the fact that she is always expressing her happiness, makes us even happier.
