Early July, 2015, we picked up a a mooring we had reserved months before in Nantucket Harbor. While on St John Island in the Caribbean in February, we had set a goal with Jim and Kim to meet them on Nantucket for the 4th.
Where most of the wooden houses and other buildings on Martha's Vineyard were painted white, most of the newer buildings on Nantucket are weathered shingles. The older buildings in town are white and brick. Like Martha's Vineyard the flowering plants and trees add color and brilliance. Boutique retail shops were located at the docks of the main marina in town. Exquisite wood sailboats were moored and sailing in the Harbor.
The 4th of July tradition in Nantucket is a water fight on Main Street between regular and volunteer fire departments. Everyone gets involved and everyone, except Beth and Kim who took refuge in a high end clothing store, got wet. The local kids were both dressed and painted for the occasion. Flags were everywhere. The evening fireworks we watched from our boat, were some of the best we have seen.
In addition to visiting the the more remote east end of the Island we had a chance visit with Vice Admiral Baldwin, one of Kim's patients. We met with Admiral Baldwin in a family house where he had spent summers while growing up. We also had several great meals in town thanks to Jim and Kim.
