July and August, 2015. The islands and ragged coast of New England and Maine, with rock outcroppings everywhere, are protected by their lighthouses.
Almost all the lighthouses we saw were attached to relatively large buildings. Most, particularly in Maine, were painted white and most had red roofs. Unlike many of the lighthouses we have seen elsewhere, all we saw, except on Cape Ann, appeared well maintained.
Along with the rock shoreline, trees, wooden homes, and implements of the lobster industry, the white red roofed lighthouses define the Coast of Maine.
